Followup to Cash's popular 1969-1971 series The Johnny Cash Show, except with an added emphasis on comedy featuring regulars Steve Martin and Jim Varney, as well as June Carter Cash performing skits as "Aunt Polly".

Broadcast as a summer replacement series, much as the original Johnny Cash Show was. Although an ongoing series did not result this time, it did lead to the production of a Christmas special that aired in December 1976. The specials would become an annual event until 1985.
