Australia-UK co-production.

A spin-off of the UK series Doctor Who focusing on the robot/A.I. character K-9 who had first appeared in Doctor Who in 1977. The character later returned to Doctor Who in 2006, and was also a semi-regular in the spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. However, the K-9 series was not produced by the BBC and therefore is considered separate from the other Doctor Who series and no explicit reference was allowed in the spin-off (though subtle references nonetheless were made.

The season ran for one season that aired over an extended period of time over 2009-2010. Although preliminary plans for a second season were announced, nothing came of this. In October 2015 the producers of the series and announced the production of the motion picture K9: TimeQuake, scheduled for release in 2017. It is not yet known whether the film will have any narrative connection to the TV series (or Doctor Who) or if it will be a reboot/reimagining of the concept.

The official on-screen title of the series is hyphenated as K-9, but it is common, even in official media, to see the title rendered as K9.
