TV Series
Notes Preceded by a number of theatrical films released between 1943 and 1951. During the series' run several episodes were compiled for a 1963 film release, "Lassie's Great Adventure". Additional films would be released in 1978, 1994 and 2005. This series ran for 19 seasons, during which it changed format and supporting cast multiple times. This had the effect of essentially establishing a new series every few years. As a result, early seasons were syndicated as different shows: the 1954-1957 episodes were retitled Jeff's Collie, and the 1957-1964 era was syndicated as Timmy & Lassie. The final two seasons were produced for syndication. An animated spin-off series, Lassie's Rescue Rangers, was launched during the final season of the parent series. Additional series, reimagining the character, were produced in 1989 (The New Lassie) and 1997 (Lassie). An unusual aspect of the TV series, and the films that preceded it, is although Lassie was said to be a female collie, she was always portrayed by a male collie. The original film Lassie, Pal, appeared only in the earliest 1954 episodes, after which his descendents played the part into the 1970s.
