I actually prefer the second album, but it just fed more into my melancholic nature... it is more of an acquired taste... a bit darker.

Third is a bit hit and miss... Thankfully they didn't just try recycling old material with it, tried to push themselves with inventive stuff like Machine Gun, which is the highlight, and Magic Door is a bit of a trippy psychadelic 60s thing which is an odd choice for them, but good song nonetheless. But Is truggle to recomend it much after that.

I think Portishead peaked with "Dummy" to be honest. It came along at the right time for me and was the album I played the most in 1995 and 1996 - one of those rare albums that felt truly complete - perfect running order, all great songs, the whole vibe... a masterpiece. The second album, I loved side one but side two bored me to tears after which they went into hibernation for a ridiculous ten years and I've never heard that third album nor feel any need to.

Portishead, sadly not enough work from them, but we do have Tricky's first album too (and to a lesser extent massive attack - Mezzanine is great, never really got on with Blue Lines or Protection, but for the odd songs on each) .... ooh, and of course: Everything but the girl: Walking Wounded.

By the way, where is this filmed?

I've got a feeling it's not too far from me... Maidstone or thereabouts?

(Squeeze: Maidstone, is the best christmas song for me, even though it's not a christmas song... bags of crimbo winter feeling)

There's a ton of bad things I could say about this show, but I'm in a good mood so... I did enjoy watching the first 5 or 6 series... and one edition from November 1994 was one of those lifechanging moments. I was watching and taping them all and headlining were INXS. Never liked them. Jools then introduced a new act after interviewing Michael Hutchence and another INXS member and the next 4 minutes just stopped me in my tracks. I then couldn't wait for the show to end so I could finally rewind it and play that song back to see if I'd hallucinated it or not. I wasn't hallucinating and they changed my life in a variety of ways as I was in Andys Records the following Monday to buy the album. The song was "Glory Box", the band, Portishead. That performance is in my top 5 greatest musical moments on BBC TV.

I'll leave it there!
