Series title changed to The Danny Thomas Show after the first few seasons. The series aired on ABC from 1953 to 1957 and on CBS from 1957 to 1964 (with reruns continuing into 1965). The series ran long enough for reruns of older seasons to begin circulating while the series was still on the air; some were broadcast by NBC under the original Make Room for Daddy title as late as 1965.

Notable for being one of the first US TV series - and very likely the first comedy series - to kill off a lead character as Jean Hagen's character was said to have died after the actress left the show.

One of the first TV series to establish a franchise of spin-offs, Make Room for Danny/Danny Thomas Show spun-off The Andy Griffith Show, The Joey Bishop Show, and The Bill Dana Show. It also had its own direct spin-off, the revival/sequel series Make Room for Granddaddy. The series is also believed to have spawned the first "old series" reunion productions with two specials reuniting the cast: The Danny Thomas TV Family Reunion in 1965, and in 1967 an episode of The Danny Thomas Hour - an anthology series - was given over to More Make Room for Daddy, a sequel. The Grandaddy revival series was itself preceded by a special of that title a year earlier.

The series was also set in the same universe as I Love Lucy and The Dick Van Dyke Show due to crossovers.
