TV Series
Notes Mary Kay and Johnny is widely seen as America’s first sitcom. The show starred real-life couple Mary Kay and Johnny Stearns playing a version of themselves — a banker and housewife living in lower Manhattan. The series first premiered on November 18, 1947, as a 15-minute weekly program on the DuMont network. On October 10th, 1948 the second season premiered changing to NBC and was expanded to 30-minutes. Shortly before this, Mary Kay found out she was pregnant and the event was written into the series. When she gave birth to her son Christopher in December, the baby made his acting debut on the series the next month. This was the first program to showcase a pregnant woman on television, predating the pregnancy on I Love Lucy by four years. Also, this was the first television show to feature a married couple in the same bed. After six months on CBS, the series was returned to NBC that summer, reverting to its original 15-minute form as a daily show replacing Kukla, Fran and Ollie. When the show returned, Mary Kay and Johnny could once again become a half hour weekly series. This would be the last collection of episodes as the show was canned by the stars themselves. The Stearns were becoming more and more tired as the couple had produced and staged every episode and Johnny had written every script. The final episode of the series aired March 11, 1950, after an estimated 300+ episodes. Of these, only one episode is known to exist, the fourth season premiere originally airing June 13, 1949. The Stearns would stay married until Johnny passed away on December 1, 2001. Images
