TV Series
Notes Anthology series launched in 1971 by PBS as a way to package dramatic programs (serials and standalones) produced for UK television for American viewers. Over time, Masterpiece became a co-producer of many of these shows and their de facto American broadcaster. Among just a few of the series aired via this umbrella series: Upstairs Downstairs, Downton Abbey, Sherlock, Prime Suspect, The Forsyte Saga, The Jewel in the Crown, Jeeves and Wooster, House of Cards, The Six Wives of Henry VIII and The Duchess of Duke Street. Between 2004 and 2008, the series aired without a host. In 2008 the series title was shortened to Masterpiece and it was split into three different programmes with different hosts: Masterpiece Classic, Masterpiece Mystery! (formerly a separate series called Mystery!), and Masterpiece Contemporary, with each segment focusing on a different genre/time frame. A one-off special Masterpiece: The American Collection, focusing on US writers, aired in 2001. Spinoff: Mystery! launched in 1980. As noted above, it was rolled into Masterpiece as of 2008. In 2007 a number of past shows were rebroadcast under the umbrella title The Best of Masterpiece Theatre.
