An early example of an "alternating lead" series, as the episodes would alternate between James Garner and Jack Kelly's characters, with the two occasionally teaming up. When Garner left the series a new character played by Roger Moore was added to take his place. During the final season, this format allowed Garner to "return" to the series as reruns from his era were inserted into the season.

Numerous revival spin-offs followed: a 1978 TV movie called The New Maverick, which was a pilot for a short-lived series called Young Maverick (with Garner guest starring). Garner himself returned for the short-lived revival Bret Maverick in 1981-1982. Jack Kelly reprised his Maverick character for the 1991 TV movie The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw which established that Maverick takes place in the same fictional universe as Kung Fu, The Rifleman, Bat Masterson, The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, and other westerns. In 1994, the series was adapted as a film titled Maverick with Mel Gibson in the title role, and with James Garner as another character, though Garner later claimed that he was in reality playing his original character, making the film actually a sequel to the series.

Moore's departure from the series freed him up to take on a role in the UK-based series The Saint.
