TV Series
Notes McHale's Navy marked one of the first times in which a comedy series was spun-off from a drama. The pilot for the series was titled Seven Against the Sea and aired in 1962 as an installment of the anthology series Alcoa Premiere. Borgnine played McHale in the pilot, which was a straight war drama. ABC, when it ordered a series, required that it be reformatted as a wartime sitcom. During the series' run two theatrical films featuring the TV cast were produced: McHale's Navy in 1964 and McHale's Navy Joins the Air Force in 1965 (Borgnine did not appear as McHale in the second film, however). The 1997 film McHale's Navy is a sequel to the TV series and features Tom Arnold as McHale's son (with Borgnine appearing in a cameo as McHale). The series also spawned a spin-off titled Broadside that aired during 1964-1965.
