Preceded by three made-for-TV films that aired in 2004-2005 under the umbrella title Murder 19C: The Detective Murdoch Mysteries, and starring Peter Outerbridge in the title role. Initially aired on Citytv, the series moved to CBC after Citytv cancelled it. At 9 seasons (as of 2015) it is one of the longest-running dramatic TV series in Canadian history.

Spawned several made-for-Internet spin-off series, including The Murdoch Effect which is a science fiction story.

Set in the late 19th Century, the series is notable for including foreshadowing of future events and technology as crime-solving gimmicks commonplace today are sometimes "invented" by the characters years in advance. Prime Minister Stephen Harper made a guest appearance (playing a policeman) in a 2011 episode.

Retitled The Artful Detective for broadcast on the US cable network Ovation, though it has also aired as Murdoch Mysteries on PBS.
