MTV-produced reality series that followed usually-wealthy teens (civilians and celebrities) as they prepared to enjoy lavish 16th-birthday parties. Episodes were shot in the US, Canada and the UK. Despite the title, the series also documented 15th and 21st birthday parties as well. The show had no regular host.

Spinoffs included Exiled, The Real Deal, and regional editions produced in the UK and Mexico. Unusually for a reality show, it also spun off several fiction productions: the comedy Super Sweet 16: The Movie, and the horror-movie trilogy My Super Psycho Sweet 16.

The series is notable for giving future Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence one of her first filmed acting jobs, appearing in a (fictional) scenario featured in a promo for the series.
