Horror-suspense anthology series hosted and directed by, John Newland. Often considered a "copycat" series to Rod Serling's Twilight Zone, it actually predated it. The show's final season was a US-UK co-production filmed in England.

Early episodes had no titles sequence, just Newland speaking the title to the camera as part of his episode introduction. In keeping with the sponsorship-driven nature of TV at the time, the series was also promoted under the title Alcoa Presents: One Step Beyond and the original closing credits featured the names playing over a still image of an Aloca product.

In the 1990s new opening and closing credits were created for the series for cable rebroadcast.

Followed in 1978 by The Next Step Beyond, a revival series produced by John Newland and featuring primarily remakes of original-series episodes.
