I saw an episode of the new series last night, and I think it's very poor - not funny, badly acted, stupid characters. It's a real shame they called it Porridge, so that it will have to be forever mentioned along with the original classic series. I notice they even used the original music too.

I think you could predict that the new series will be doomed to failure before it even starts. How on earth could you ever replace Ronnie Barker as Fletch and Fulton MacKay, Brian Wilde and the late great Richard Beckinsale & Peter Vaughan. Not to mention David Jason, Christopher Biggins & Sam Kelly. It's on a hiding to nothing

After a comedy pilot revival to celebrate 60 years of the sitcom from radio to TV,the new series of Porridge, written by the same comedy writers, and this time Kevin Bishop who fills Ronnie Barker`s shoes plays Norman Stanley Fletcher`s son Nigel Norman Fletcher has been banged up in Wakeley Prison for a series of cybercrimes and Mark Bonnar will play Officer Meekie, which is like Mr.Mackay and the new series starts on 6/10/2017 with 6 new episodes.

Ah yes, the menacing yet genial Harry Grout. He was terrific in the 1975 Xmas show, where he was helping one of the cons to dig a tunnel. Had a couple of warders putting up his decorations for him!

Definitely one of THE classics. Wonderful characters and some great comical situations. Kenneth Williams saw an episode and wrote in his diary something like "I fail to see what's funny about a comedy set in a prison" but when you had Clement-LaFrenais as writers, Ronnie Barker on top form along with a great supporting cast (MacKay was ace and who couldn't fail to like dear Lennie Godber?) you had comedy Gold.

Of course one of it's most memorable guest characters was the creepy Grouty - possibly Peter Vaughan's finest role yet he only appeared in 3 or 4 episodes at the very most yet some think he was in much more!
