This series is NOT to be confused with the long-running NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live, which debuted one month later (and was initially titled NBC's Saturday Night as a result). This was a live-broadcast prime-time variety series hosted by the popular, and sometimes controversial, sports announcer.

The series featured several regular comedy performers who were dubbed the "Prime Time Players" which led the NBC series to call its team the "Not Ready for Prime Time Players". All three major performers in the Prime Time Players, most notably Bill Murray, would later join the cast of the other SNL.
