Predating MTV by a decade, Schoolhouse Rock! was a series of three-minute animated music videos that aired on ABC in between children's programs, usually on Saturday mornings. Many of the songs, which covered everything from mathematics to American history, became iconic.

The series originally ran from 1973 to 1985, then returned for another run from 1993 to 2000. As with Sesame Street (another series that followed the "music video for children" format), it was not uncommon for newer productions to rotate with rebroadcasts of older episodes, though some were retired if they became too out dated. Further new installments were produced for home video in 2002 and 2009. A total of 64 installments have been produced, including the ones for home video.

The series had no regular voice actors, but did feature rotating performers of the songs, a number of whom were also the songwriters.

A similarly themed series by the same producers, focusing on the metric system and titled The Metric Marvels, aired on NBC in 1978.
