Began in 1994 on Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) Television channel as a replacement for the test card and is now broadcast on Bayern Alpha. The broadcasts have gained a massive cult following particularly with club-goers due to the use of chillout music over the images shown. Several clubs across Europe transmit the show live in their chillout rooms.
Initially, only views of the Earth from space were shown. However, the programme has added extra segments to include science and theological discussion, underwater views, and an early morning across the world section called "The World Awakes". Most of the segments have no speech, just music and pictures, the format which gained it such a cult following.
Due to higher GEMA music royalty demands, BR stopped showing Space Night in January 2013. However, public pressure forced them to bring the show back one month later, initially as repeated shows but with new footage from November, using music created under the Creative Commons licence.

RadoxTheGreen 12th Jul 2015		I wasn't sure if this should still be classed as a programme or if it's now a programme block. However, BR TV call it a programme and it's their show so who am I to argue. It certainly started as a programme (see the video from the 90s I think?), but it's grown a bit over the years. The video is a clip by the way, the actual programme broadcasts through the night.
