Short-lived sitcom commissioned to capitalize on the popularity of Channing, who had become popular due to recent TV movie work and appearing in Grease. In an unusual move, "Stockard Channing in..." is an official part of the series title.
After cancellation, the series format was retooled and a new series titled The Stockard Channing Show aired in 1980 using the same crew and sets as Just Friends, and even the same logo typeface, but with new characters and concept. The DVD release of Just Friends carries the title The Stockard Channing Show and combines episodes from both series.
