Spin-off of The Rookies focusing on the highly armed Special Weapons and Tactics division of the Los Angeles police. At the time the series aired, the concept of the "SWAT team" was still relatively new in US policing. Two seasons were produced and the show's theme music became a major instrumental hit.

Remade on several occasions as a 2003 feature film, S.W.A.T., a belated 2011 in-name-only sequel to the film, S.W.A.T.: Firefight, and a new remake series that debuted in 2017.
