Preceded by a radio version that aired from 1938 to 1949, this was one of the first major successful American network TV series, establishing Milton Berle as TV's first superstar, though he wasn't the TV version's original host.

The series appeared to alternate between using the standard US spelling "Theater" and the UK spelling "Theatre" in the title. Opening credits surviving from the first year show it as Theater.
