According to the book "The Worst TV Shows Ever" by Bart Andrews and Brad Dunning, this series was commissioned due to CBS network president James Aubrey being unconvinced that another series his network commissioned for the 1964-65 season - Gilligan's Island - would work, yet he still wanted a nautical-based sitcom.
