Preceded by another animated series in 1967-1968. Road, Cassidy and Tyler had all previously voiced characters in the earlier series.

Only 13 episodes were produced but the series was rerun for some time.

On-screen title is The Fantastic Four, however the title The New Fantastic Four is spoken during the opening and has been erroneously given to the series by sources such as Wikipedia.

For this series the character of Human Torch was replaced by a robot called HERBIE. A longstanding urban myth is that the network banned the Torch character for fear of children setting themselves on fire. In fact, the Human Torch is not included because at the time another party held the TV rights and had plans for an animated series featuring either the Fantastic Four version of the character or the original version introduced in the late 1930s.
