Notes

Based upon a German TV game show, ATV made their own version which had contestants competing for prizes using live crossbows attached to TV cameras which would then be aimed at a variety of targets to win prizes. It gave us the infamous "Bernie The Bolt" who would place the arrows into the bows and then a blindfolded cameraman would have to obey instructions from the contestants to aim at the targets then fire. In the 21st Century, health and safety would never permit such a show like this to be made!

The show went out live - until the final series - and also mixed in variety elements through a diverse amount of guests from all areas of entertainment. Often derided for being tacky and for things regularly going wrong, Bob Monkhouse was in his element and helped make the show work thanks to his quick witted thinking and banter. Unfortunately, Monkhouse was accused of taking backhanders to plug products and was infamously fired in 1972. In his place came Norman Vaughan followed by Charlie Williams and the results were abysmal to the degree there was a public outcry and eventually ATV caved in and brought back Monkhouse for the final series.

Because it was live and thanks to it's cheap nature, ATV barely ever bothered to record the shows, so the vast majority of them vanished the moment they were broadcast. A handful of random editions do exist (just one episode apiece of Jackie Rae and Norman Vaughan's time and two from Charlie Williams') and Bob Monkhouse himself had a whole bunch of shows, mostly from the final series in his own archives which he had had taped himself.

Anne Aston, the reason I watched every week.

I remember Bob Monkhouse in an interview saying that there was one time a stage hand got shot by the crossbow. They played it down and rapidly installed blocking mechanisms to prevent the crossbow straying away from the target zone. As you say, they would never be allowed to do the show today.
