TV Series
Notes Celebrity and comedy-based game show, a forerunner to the 1970s version of Match Game. The original series ran from 1966 to 1981 (following a 1965 pilot). In 1983-84 the series merged with Match Game to form Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour. Another version of the game show ran from 1986 to 1989 and again from 1998-2004. This last version was also branded as H2 (as in H-squared). During the original series the "The" was dropped at some point. Both network daytime and syndicated nighttime versions were produced. Spin-offs: Storybook Squares (same format, but for kids and featuring fictional characters) and Hip Hop Squares, a music-based version for MTV. Many international versions of the game have been produced, most notably the UK's Celebrity Squares. The center square for most of the original series run was occupied by Paul Lynde, who actually won two Emmys for this. Jeffrey Tambor was the show's announcer during the 2002-2003 season. Most of the original series has been wiped. According to Wikipedia, about 100 episodes from the late 1960s-early 1970s were recovered.
