Co-created by Danny Thomas a spin-off of Thomas' series Make Room for Daddy (aka The Danny Thomas Show). The series began on NBC but switched to CBS for its final season.

After the first season the series was revamped. Although Bishop continued to play the same character, he had a new job and the supporting cast of the series was changed.

In 1967 Bishop went on to host a talk show also titled The Joey Bishop Show. He also became the most frequent of Johnny Carson's guest hosts on the Tonight Show up until the mid-1980s.
