Produced by Canadian producer Lorne Michaels, creator of Saturday Night Live. Preceded by a special that aired in 1988 on CBC in Canada and HBO in the US. The series itself debuted on HBO before the CBC. CBS in the US imported the series to air in a late-night time slot from 1992 to 1995. The original CBC run ended in 1994, but the CBS airing continued into early 1995.

Often compared to Monty Python's Flying Circus, both in terms of format and in terms of the fact the Kids in the Hall troupe have frequently worked together (in whole or in part) on numerous TV and film productions, although officially the only major filmed KITH spinoffs have been the 1996 movie Brain Candy and the 2010 reunion miniseries Death Comes to Town.
