TV Series
Notes Comedian Red Buttons stared in his own variety series begging on October 14, 1952 on CBS. The show featured a monologue, dance numbers, and sketches with Red playing many of his popular characters. The series became a huge success making the star a house hold name and his catchphrase "Strange things are happening” became a common place phase in the 50s. Despite the popularity, the series started to develop problems behind the scenes. The money on the show began getting tight and writers and directors were getting fired left and right. The trouble was so massive that CBS abandoned the series with the final episode on the station airing June 14, 1954. The series was then picked up by NBC for its third season. The variety format was kept for the new network premiering October 1, 1954. Ratings were no where as good as its CBS years (#11 it’s first years and #12 it’s second) and The Red Buttons Show was changed to a sitcom. The new format started in very early 1955 and had Red playing himself as a TV comic with a new cast of regulars. The change didn’t really work and didn’t help out the ratings, which at this point had fallen out of the top 30, leading to NBC also canceling the series with the final show airing May 27, 1955.
