Notes

A prime-time spinoff of The Tonight Show, with Allen hosting both shows until 1957 (with Ernie Kovacs filling in for Allen on nights when he was preparing the prime-time series). Notable for featuring an infamous (but intended-to-be-funny) performance by Elvis singing "Hound Dog" to an actual hound dog.

Retitled The Steve Allen Plymouth Show (to reflect a naming sponsor) in 1959-60 which was its final season on NBC. After a year hiatus, the series returned in the fall of 1961 for a brief run on ABC. After a six-month hiatus, the show moved to first-run syndication in 1962 and was converted into a late-night variety format to air directly opposite The Tonight Show. During the syndication era, the series was known both as The Westinghouse Show and The New Steve Allen Show.

The series ended when Allen became the host of the game show I've Got a Secret; due to the way the scheduling worked out, the series ended its run with Regis Philbin filling in as guest host.

Much as with the Tonight Show, Allen's series featured a number of regular cast members appearing in skits, many of whom lunched their careers with Allen on Tonight and The Steve Allen Show.

In the 1990s the series was reedited into half-hour editions for syndication, with new introductions recorded by Allen himself.
