Wasn't this co-influenced by The Phil Silvers Show (character "Bilko") and West Side Story? :read:

Some of us have never been able to hear the theme (the closing theme in particular) without hearing that ruddy jump resulting from the edit.

The BBC were often very silly about this; an edition of Down Your Way once had to refer to it coming from "a car factory in Dagenham" throughout, because they weren't allowed to use the word 'Ford'.

Didn't Daws Butler provide one of the voices? Was it Bennie?

The show was always "Top Cat" in Australia. We only got to see it in colour from 1975 when our stations started broadcasting full-time in colour from 1st March, that year.

"It debuted on 16 May 1962 under its original name but was renamed on 13 June 1962 to The Boss Cat, which was shortened on 22 February 1967 to Boss Cat. The reason for the name change less than one month after it debuted was that Top Cat was also the name of a then-popular British brand of cat food. The dialogue and theme tune still referred to the character by his original name but a small cut was made at the climax of the opening credits (resulting in a slight 'jump' in the film) and a title card added before the episode proper. Similarly, the 'Top Cat' name was edited from the final section of the show's closing credits, causing another slight 'jump' (as Top Cat is putting on his eyeshades and readying himself for sleep in his trash can).

Despite the presence of the 'Boss Cat' title card, the continued use of the Top Cat name (and the acronym 'T.C') throughout the UK-aired soundtrack meant that the character was always popularly referred to as 'Top Cat' by every generation of UK viewers. The 'Boss Cat' title card was last used for a repeat run in 1989; by the time the series was next aired in 1999 the 'Top Cat' food brand had long since discontinued in the UK (as had any concerns about mirroring such a brand name even if it did exist), allowing the original title to be used. This continues to be the case in contemporary showings on Boomerang and BBC Two". - Wikipedia

I watched this every week in the 60s and can't remember the Boss Cat name, it was and always will be Top Cat, probably as explained above because of the theme song.

There was only one series with 30 episodes I was shocked and had to look on three different websites to make sure. It was called Boss Cat here in the UK when it first aired on the BBC, but seeing that Top Cat was a brand of a cat food at the the time and the BBC have a policy for no advertisement placement (The Kinks Lola is a good example) even though they kept the theme song.

Only 30 episodes? When I was a kid, this was one of the main cartoons I'd watch. I imagined there were many more than that.
