This sitcom was notable for undergoing multiple title changes in response to the firing of its original lead, Valerie Harper, over a salary dispute and the dramatic way this was addressed in the series. After two seasons in the lead, Harper's character was killed off and Sandy Duncan brought in as a replacement. Under the titles Valerie's Family: The Hogans and simply Valerie's Family, plotlines touched on the grief felt by her family after Harper's character suddenly dies. Later, the series changed title again to The Hogan Family. It also change networks from NBC to CBS for its final season.

Despite the turmoil, the series ran for six seasons.
