Notes

Running between 2nd January 1962 and 20th September 1978, Z Cars was for it's time, a groundbreaking police drama series set in the fictional town of "Newtown" which actually made much use of Merseyside locale. The cast changed many times over the years and guest stars is almost like an A-Z of British acting talent. The one mainstay was James Ellis as Bert Lynch who appeared in the vast majority of episodes over it's entire run. It actually had two distinct runs... it originally ended in 1965, but the BBC revived it in 1967 in a twice weekly format before returning to 50 minute episodes in 1972.

Around 300 episodes still exist in the BBC archive but no episodes exist at all from 1968 and 1971.

South Shields Football Club 11th Sep 2024		Tuesday January 2nd 1962,BBC-tv Series Z Cars made it's debut for the first time with Stratford Johns as Inspector Charlie Barlow-Frank Windsor as Sgt John Watt. The Famous Stars of Z Cars alongside John Slater,Mitzi Rogers,George Sewell,Brian Blessed,James Ellis,The Swinging Blue Jeans performed live,Leonard Rossiter,Liz Dawn,Cheryl Murray,Hylda Baker & Terry Edmonds. Wednesday September 20th 1978,Z Cars has come to the end for the final time on BBC-1. Terry Christie.
