Preceded by a made-for-TV film that established the show's base concept: a man named Jake Winters loses the love of his life and seeks answers in the memoirs of women writing about their great love affairs. In the TV series, Winters provides opening narration a la Rod Serling in Twilight Zone, introducing myriad stories.

Followed by a long-running series of direct-to-video followup films that continued into the 2000s.
