jaimeeduardo 8th Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumGordon MacRae And Dorothy Kirsten With Gerald Shirkey - The Desert Song (1978) | Comment:
This description is somewhat unusual in that much of it comes from the container, the only source here for track information. Note the inclusion on the container of the names of roles or kinds of performers ("Soldiers," "The Riffs," "The Company") rather than performers' names. This makes constructing an artist entry more difficult. In this case, I've combined fuller forms of personal names ("Gordon MacRae" rather than "MacRae") since both forms appear together (and the fuller form makes for a more useful online search term), and omitted the role names since they aren't the names of artists/performers. It remains to be seen whether it is practical to include discs such as this one here (with more complex entries), and without the option of a main entry under composer which would simplify input to some extent. Some of the commercial systems sometimes use the composer's name as performer, but they also end up with duplicate records and nonsense entries (pre-recording era composers as performers) . I include the full original worksheet in case changes are made later:

jaimeeduardo 8th Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumRisë Stevens, Robert Merrill - The Chocolate Soldier (Abridged) (1959) | The artist info. on this record is more complex on this example, so I'll add my original record below. This shows how I would organize the data in case there are later changes to the record. The more complex the item, the more options there are for different ideas on organization.

jaimeeduardo 7th Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumHerb Alpert - Rise (1979) | A-Ron-Ways on B4 is an odd (to me) phonetic transcription of B4's title, a track adapted from Concierto de Aranjuez, a well-known concerto for guitar and orchestra by Joaquín Rodrigo. The pronunciation indicated is American; it is often pronounced with a traditional European accent. I would spell it "R-On-Who-Eth" to approach this sound in English.

jaimeeduardo 7th Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumEmil Gilels - Sonata No. 12 For Piano In A-flat Major, Op. 26, Sonata No. 16 For Piano In G Major, Op. 31 No. 1 (1978) | Since there is no collective album title, title is taken from labels on both sides. The label mostly in the Roman alphabet rather than Cyrillic seems unusual.

jaimeeduardo 5th Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumJohn Barry - Midnight Cowboy (1969) | Track A1 made the U.S. top 10 in 1969.
Cover images of Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight.
The movie starred Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Brenda Vaccaro, John McGiver, Ruth White, Sylvia Miles, and Barnard Hughes.
This LP is another example of one that could probably be entered as "Various Artists" or under John Barry, who is given overall credit on the cover. Barry also composed the music on half the tracks.
|
jaimeeduardo 5th Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumLupita D'Alessio - Lupita D'Alessio (1982) | On track B4, "Sue y Javier" is the name of a performer (a duo), not names of two independent composers.
Note the song listings on cover rather than an LP title. This is typical on some Mexican LPs of this period.
|
jaimeeduardo 5th Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumCarlo Bergonzi - Operatic Recital (1959) | Opera titles not listed on B Side for lack of space on label. Operas are:
B1 L'Africaine --
B2 Andrea Chénier --
B3-B4 Adrianna Levouvreur --
B5-6 Tosca --
B7 Manon Lescaut.
This album later re-issued with a more conservative photo; here a young looking Bergonzi appears to be costumed as Radames in Verdi's Aïda.

jaimeeduardo 4th Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumRitmo 7 - Nuestro Amor Prohibido (1977) | Las viejas canciones (track B1) is a Spanish translation of Those Oldies But Goodies, a U.S. top 10 hit in 1961. Other sources cite composer credit for Paul Politi and Nick Curinga; container cites Little Caesar (Carl Burnett).
|
jaimeeduardo 4th Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Oldies But Goodies Vol. 9 (1968) | Track A3, Release Me (1962), is the same song that became a signature hit for Engelbert Humperdinck in 1967.
|
jaimeeduardo 4th Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Rhythm ´N´ Blues Vol. 2 Sweet 'n Greasy (1968) | Recordings date from ca. 1949-1957.
Pub. date 1968 is probabale.
The Crystals group here is not the same as the 1960s The Crystals of Phil Spector.
|
jaimeeduardo 3rd Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumJuan Gabriel - Con Tu Amor (1981) | Juan Gabriel is one of the best-known singer/songwriters of Mexico, and his is a household name among U.S. Spanish speakers. To the English speaking audience in the U.S., however, he is a complete unknown. Apparently he planned on launching this album as a crossover attempt with the English language track With Your Love listed on the sleeve, but it was substituted with another song, Brasil es un amor. Perhaps the English song wasn't considered ready for issue in the U.S.

jaimeeduardo 2nd Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumMaria Callas - Maria Callas Sings Arias By Beethoven, Mozart And Weber (1964) | This is what is called "late" Callas, when the voice was in decline. These selections are well-known, but they are not selections Callas sang in performance or on previous records. If I remember correctly, this much anticipated disc was accompanied in record stores by a life-size standing cardboard version of the cover photo.

jaimeeduardo 2nd Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' (1965) | Pub. date 1965 probable. You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' reached Billboard U.S. #1 in December 1964, and is referred to as a past hit in the liner note by Phil Spector.
|
jaimeeduardo 2nd Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumDave Edmunds - Subtle As A Flying Mallet (1975) | An ambitious solo project in homage to some great hits of the past including Baby I Love You by The Ronettes, Maybe by The Chantels, Da Doo Ron Ron by The Crystals, and Born to be With You by The Chordettes. Reliving Arlene Smith's soaring soprano lead on Maybe must have been a challenge.
|
jaimeeduardo 1st Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Schlagerrallye (1965) | A compilation from Germany including some charming instrumentals and a few cringe inducing novelty songs (track A4 is a German translation of Don't Go Near the Indians, a hit in 1962 for Rex Allen). Of two gems here, one is Ob in Bombay, ob in Rio with the exotic sounding German of Italian Swiss speaker Anita Traversi. A sweeping ballad with beautiful lyrics and melody, plus an unforgettable arrangement (think that's a tuba sinking to the bottom of its range at song end). The other gem is Wilhelm Tell Twist, irresistible with its energy, good humor and engagingly gruff vocal.
Pub. date 1965 is an estimate.

jaimeeduardo 1st Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumLos Lobos - How Will The Wolf Survive? (1984) | Cat. no. 9 25177-1 appears only on container spine; the "9" appears about an inch from the rest of the number.

jaimeeduardo 1st Oct 2013 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 20 Gold Originals (1970) | This 20-track compilation contains many top original hits; sound quality is acceptable for having so many tracks per side.
Pub. date 1970 is approximate. Tracks date from ca. 1966-1970. No publisher or place of publication given. Could be a bootleg, but was purchased originally from a standard retail outlet.
Note the goof on container for Bill Deal & The Rhondells: "Big Deal & The Rhondells."
