LaurenceD SUBS ● 26th May 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumBilly Lee Riley - In Action!!! (1966) | The guitar on the cover, mentioned in the notes as a Baldwin Model #550, is better known as a Baldwin Virginian.
Listening to this LP, it sounds like they were really trying to duplicate the Johnny Rivers/Whiskey a' Go Go sound. Even the LP title is the same as one of Rivers' LPs!

LaurenceD SUBS ● 26th May 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumTerry Gibbs - Mallets A-Plenty (1956) | "Soupy's On" dedicated to Soupy Sales. That was also the name of Sales' nighttime talk show in Detroit in the 1950s. Many notable jazz musicians made guest appearances.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 26th May 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumLester Flatt And Earl Scruggs - Hear The Whistles Blow (1967) | My copy has a mono cover with a sticker.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 25th May 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumBuck Owens - Buck Owens Sings Harlan Howard (1961) | Buck's first Capitol LP was released in January 1961 with the catalog number T-1489. So I wonder why his second LP was assigned the old number T-1482...
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 28th Mar 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - She Loves Me (1963) | "Thank You Madam", listed on the cover (side one), was omitted on the LP, possibly due to time constraints; it was restored on the CD release, along with the final curtain call.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 28th Mar 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Original Soundtrack From Uncle Tom's Cabin (1968) | There are no bands separating the tracks.
The track featuring Juliette Gréco (So Much The Worse For Me) is sung in French, and on some corresponding non-U.S. releases is titled "Tant pis, tant pis pour moi".
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 19th Mar 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Gene Price Country Express (1974) | I see one error on the cover: track D6 should have been listed as "I'm NOT Through Loving You Yet" :-)
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 3rd Mar 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumLionel Newman Conducting The 20th Century-Fox Orchestra And Chorus - Music From The Sound Track: Boy On A Dolphin (1957) | Although the track list appears to indicate that the entire score was composed by Friedhofer, Webster and Morakis, I believe that this only applies to tracks A1 and B7, the remainder being the work of Friedhofer alone. Paul Francis Webster wrote the lyrics for the title song which was based on the melody from "Ti Ein' Afto" (aka "Tin Afto") by Takis Morakis.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 2nd Mar 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumDora Hall - Tramping | Presumably the songs listed as "Composer-Publisher Pending" were each composed by Jill Jackson, Sy Miller, Ben Raleigh and/or H. B. Barnum.
Incidentally "Pretty Boy" seems to be the same song as on this James Bell single, although that release credits composers Bell, Stoval, McBride, Gray.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 16th Feb 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumGogi Grant - The Wayward Wind (1961) | The labels are also marked "HNLP-19". I believe that this LP was issued in mono format only.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 31st Dec 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - S. F. Record Tid-Bits (1957) | The album originally came with an informative inner sleeve, and a catalog which was inserted into the slot in the front of the cover (both missing from my copy).
Also, the track listings on the labels do not show the song titles, but instead show the album titles from which the sample tracks were selected. I have gone through the individual LP listings while listening to this record in an attempt to determine the actual titles of the selections. Here is what I've been able to pin down:
A1 / Albert White & The Gaslight Orchestra / Robert E. Lee
A2 / Ree Brunell / When I Fall In Love
A3 / Max Morath / How You Gonna Keep 'Em Down On The Farm
A4 / Salvini Big Band / (similar to "Topsy", might be Topsy Returns)
A5 / Bee Goman / Good Old Days
A6 / Albert White & The Gaslight Orch. / Dinah
A7 / Guckenheimer Band / Vilia
B1 / Albert White & The Gaslight Orchestra / (?)
B2 / Mel Lewis & Septet / (?)
B3 / Original Cylinders / (Collins and Harlan) / Arra Wanna
B4 / Jerry Coker Quartet / Waters Edge
B5 / Sutro's Nickelodeons / (?)
B6 / Player Piano / Old Piano Roll Blues

LaurenceD SUBS ● 29th Dec 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumRed, Wilder, Blue - Red, Wilder, Blue (1971) | Southern California band.
Lucky Floyd previously played in The Sparkles.
Mike Ballew recorded an LP for Liberty around 1980-81, which was shelved and later released by Bear Family.
Mack Tubb released a single on the Texas Hub label in the 1960s (as Mack Tubb and the Shades).

LaurenceD SUBS ● 12th Nov 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumKing Crimson - Après Cosmic Était | My copy is a later pressing using the 'pig' labels.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 12th Nov 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Vagabonds - The Vagabonds | The original Unique release was circa 1956; this one would seem to be from around 1960, rather late in RKO's timeline, but I am unable to quite pin it down as yet.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 25th Oct 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumDora Hall - [no title] | Front cover of my copy is stamped with "Teen Or Adult". Other copies exist stamped with "Adult Teen Pop".
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 21st Oct 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Merry Christmas, Baby (1974) | Despite various other sites dating this release 1985, I'm setting it to 1974. Besides the dates on the labels, the look and feel of this pressing is very much 1970s, not 1980s. That, plus the "Also available on eight track tape" message on the back cover.
Looking around on the web however, it does appear that this album was in fact revived sometime around 1985. Perhaps those pressings have some distinguishing characteristics.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 15th Sep 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Great Million Sellers Volume 1 (1962) | Individual tracks are either true stereo or simulated stereo.
I took the release date from bsnpubs, which seems plausible, as some of the tracks (e.g. Billy Mure) appeared as late as mid-1961.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 12th Sep 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumEsther Ofarim - Is It Really Me! (1965) | Note that the liner notes refer to the LP title as "Earthquake". That, along with the fact that the UK release does not contain the title track, makes me wonder if the track Is It Really Me was added late in the process.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 22nd Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumJoseph Gershenson Conducting The Universal-International Orchestra - This Earth Is Mine! (1959) | I know nothing about this film, but when I see that title I can't help but recall that Martin Mull song: "This land ain't your land, This land is my land, ..." etc.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 22nd Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - General Electric Presents Go Fly A Kite (1966) | This "industrial musical" was staged Sept 19-21, 1966 (about one month before the Broadway opening of Cabaret).
This album consists of (mono) studio recordings, not the staged performance.
I must admit that these songs are quite engaging, although the lyrics are mostly corporate propaganda. My copy is clean, but the quality of the pressing is fair, with noisy defects here and there.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 19th Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumJudith Anderson - Medea (1949) | Here is the two-page ad listing the 30 LP releases scheduled for Sept 5, 1949: Billboard Aug 27, 1949, pp.18,19.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 10th Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumFoster Brooks - Foster Brooks "Sings" (1981) | Hm, I don't recall seeing this one on TV...
Anyway, does anyone know if this New Jersey CMS label is the same outfit as the New York label that we currently have?

LaurenceD SUBS ● 21st Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumMilt Jackson - In A New Setting (1965) | I have included images from the first pressing which includes multi-page die-cut pages of liner notes and photos, hinged at the top, calendar-style.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 2nd Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumGerry And The Pacemakers - Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying (1964) | Added scans for sleeve back and labels, both of which list track A5 as "Mabellene".

LaurenceD SUBS ● 1st Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Jumpin! With Pop Hits Of Tomorrow | An intriguing album, more so by the fact that you have to guess which artist is featured on which tracks. And some of those artist names look rather questionable.
Tracks a1,a2,b3,b5 seem to be in true stereo, the rest are rechanneled from what I can determine.
I have identified a couple of the performers. The recordings that I've located so far all seem to have a George Motola connection, for example:
- B5 "My Guy" is definitely The Carter Sisters, from Troy 1002. I'm guessing that A1 "Are You Thinking" is also from that single, but I would have to hear the single track to be 100% sure.
- B2 "Heavenly Angels" is The Viscaynes or 'Viscaines' from VPM 1006.
- A3 "You're My Only Love" is the same song as on Philles 101, but it's a different singer.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 27th Jun 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumEnnio Morricone - Exorcist II: The Heretic (Original Soundtrack) (1977) | Added back cover scan with track listing on a sticker. The sticker covered the original track listing, which was in the incorrect order, and can be seen on earlier pressings.
