mojofilter 19th Feb 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumSergio Mendes And Brasil '66 - Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes And Brasil '66 (1966) | I just happened upon this page after a long time, and PaythePiper's question led me to look up this album on CD. It was still being released on A&M as late as 2014. Of course, now A&M has been folded into Universal, and Herb Alpert has (had?) his own label that reissued some of the A&M material. Qobuz.com offers Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 music as CD-quality FLAC files now, from A&M masters, and Concord Records reissue masters, and they are still calling it "Mais Que Nada."

mojofilter 25th Jan 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumBrian Jones - Brian Jones Presents The Pipes Of Pan At Joujouka (1971) | I have a promo of this album. Stock copies have only one track per side, but the promo is banded. The 13 tracks have no titles, but their timings are listed.

mojofilter 10th Dec 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - A Hard Day's Night (1979) | I have a Canadian pressing of this. It is stereo.
|
mojofilter 9th Dec 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumJames Taylor - Mud Slide Slim And The Blue Horizon (1971) | Yeah. He's not sitting on the jukebox, he's telling another person at the bar that it's his record playing on it.
|
mojofilter 13th Oct 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Long Tall Sally (1980) | I have a copy of this LP autographed by (the late) Paul White in Toronto, 1991. He signed The Beatles to Capitol of Canada when the US branch couldn't be bothered. He produced their Canadian albums with unique compilations of tracks. They're pictured on the rear sleeve, "Beatlemania! With The Beatles" and "Twist And Shout," He also produced a raft of other Canadian artists from the time when there was virtually no recording industry in Canada.

mojofilter 26th Jun 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 7-Up (1971) | This album was one of at least two giveaways to tie in with a promotion for 7-Up Rally Caps, which were a rubber pry-off insert under the bottle cap on 7Up soft drinks. Collect x number of caps and win a prize.
|
mojofilter 26th Apr 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumDale - Riot In English (1988) | Dale is still known under her surname from the period 1979-1986 when she was married to drummer Terry Bozzio. He played with Frank Zappa's band on 26 albums, and later on seven albums by Missing Persons, the group that was founded by Dale and Terry.

mojofilter 30th Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Spring Break (1983) | You're welcome. I know that I found this in Toronto in the late 1980s. I can't remember where, though, but I must have been browsing and came across this record and thought, "well, I'll probably never see another one of these!" and picked it up for cheap. Haven't played it yet.
|
mojofilter 30th Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Spring Break (1983) | Added the sheet of paper indicating what the label copy would be, that was supplied with a test pressing of the album, made at Allied, Los Angeles.
|
mojofilter 22nd Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumJerry Goldsmith - Explorers (1985) | Added a scan of the top of the front cover of the first promo pressing sent to radio stations. These had a sticker saying one of the artists on the album is Robert Plant. But Plant does not appear here, it's Robert Palmer.
|
mojofilter 22nd Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Dusty And Sweets McGee (1971) | There was no point in my scanning the album jacket. The front has a huge sticker applied by Warner Bros. Records Radio Service to say what's on the record, and other stickers and stamps to identify the station whose library it came from. You can see an unfettered cover at discogs if you're interested.

mojofilter 21st Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Homer (1970) | Added promo labels.
|
mojofilter 20th Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Medicine Ball Caravan (1971) | Added promo labels.
|
mojofilter 20th Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 1969 (1988) | Added promotional labels and a scan of the gold promo stamp on the album's rear cover.
In the center ring of side 2, you can make out the letters E (near 11:00), A (1:00) and T (7:00). There is also an illegible S, which indicates that the metal parts for this album were made at Allied Record Company.
Due to the identical typesetting - except for the promo text - of my labels and those of user Vinylville pressed at code 49 [Specialty Records Corp., Olyphant, Pennsylvania], it looks like the images uploaded by dr. pepper1952 are either from a later pressing, or a concurrent issue typeset at another unidentified pressing plant.
Note: I've just read John Fogerty's book, in which he states that CCR had it written into their contract with Fantasy that they were adamantly opposed to any of their songs being compiled onto other albums. Same as The Beatles and others. This must have been one more of Saul Zaentz' ways to screw him over. John would never have approved it.

mojofilter 16th Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumSergio Mendes And Brasil '66 - Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes And Brasil '66 (1966) | This group's first big single was from this album. In nearly every mention of the song in print or on the web, it is referred to as Más Que Nada, which translates to "More Than Anything." However, it is still being titled on every LP and CD issue where included as "Mais Que Nada," which translates to "More Than Nothing." You'd think that if it was just a typo, someone in any one of dozens of pressing plants or graphic designers would have corrected it in the last 50-odd years.
Maybe someone extremely proficient in the language could clear this up for us.

mojofilter 9th Feb 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Ain't She Sweet (1964) | Added LP front and rear images from scans, stitched together with Microsoft Image Composite Editor, as opposed to photographs.
|
mojofilter 21st Jan 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumMason Williams - The Mason Williams' Phonograph Record (1968) | Added original 1968 CDN Warner Bros/Seven Arts gold labels. The scans don't show that they are on glossy paper.
|
mojofilter 18th Feb 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumKate Bush - Mini-LP (1983) | I have two copies on clear vinyl and a third on black. Haven't seen a white vinyl one!
|
mojofilter 16th Nov 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumFM [UK] - Indiscreet (1986) | No doubt to distinguish them from the Canadian group FM that was going at the same time.
|
mojofilter 23rd Oct 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumDick Orkin, Jane Roberts And Jim Runyon - The Best Of Chickenman (1967) | Original pressings are on Spot Records, released by the show's first distributors, Spot Productions, Ft. Worth, TX. The front cover bears the legend "...as heard exclusively on WCFL." Atco picked up the record for national distribution and removed the WCFL line from the front and the Spot Productions credit on the back.

mojofilter 27th Sep 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Highveld Country Hits Volume 4 (1985) | Maurice Gibb was a country-and-western artist popular in South Africa? Or were there two people named Maurice Gibb in the music industry?
|
mojofilter 8th Sep 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Osmonds - Love Me For A Reason (1974) | I clicked on this to see the Black Beauty, and then I noticed that they are all dressed like... pimps??? Well, cartoon pimps. But why?
|
mojofilter 8th Sep 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumCanned Heat - Historical Figures And Ancient Heads (1972) | On A3, Little Richard's name got separated into two people here by the use of a hyphen. His name is Richard Wayne Penniman. No hyphen.
|
mojofilter 8th Sep 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kinks - Kinks Greatest Hits (1975) | I was working at Sam The Record Man's main store in Toronto in 1981. When I opened a box of this album shipped from Phonodisc, there was one copy on top of the pile of 25 that had a printing error. The photo was mirror-imaged and in black and white. None of the rest of the albums in the box were like it, and I've never seen another one. But I did score that one. The differences on the back are that Phonodisc's street address and postal code are not printed, just its Scarborough location; there is no (C) notice after the logo, and there is no printing in French.
This is the same as the UK LP Well Respected Kinks with the track B3 Don't You Fret replaced by Lola. Where the front cover of the UK LP lists the songs "and others," this one replaces that with "and Lola," which even looks like it was printed on as an afterthought. The kerning is even worse on the B/W cover.

mojofilter 6th Sep 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumKing Harvest - Dancing In The Moonlight (1972) | It's odd to see Ron Altbach credited with writing Dancing In The Moonlight on the album label and cover, when it was written by Sherman Kelly. All the singles at 45cat credit Kelly, and so does their bio and an article on Wikipedia.

mojofilter 6th Sep 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - CHAM-1280 Presents The Luxury Sound Of Candlelight And Wine Volume 1 (1968) | "Candlelight And Wine" was a popular very easy listening program that ran evenings 6-11 PM on CHFI-FM, Toronto, flagship station of Rogers Broadcasting. Its programming was simulcast in mono on 680 CHFI-AM. Rogers owned CHAM in Hamilton, Ontario, and instituted a similar format there beginning November 1, 1967.
There is an album with the same title (but not the same tracks) as this one, except as presented by 680 CHFI on CSPS 336.
This album has to date from December 1968. Discogs lists a CSPS 355 Christmas album from 1968, and this one is only three numbers earlier. I have a CSPS 393 LP that was issued 1969, so 1968 must be accurate for this album.
By 1970, CHAM had changed its format to Top 40, and in 1971, CHFI-AM became CFTR, and also went Top 40, becoming the major competition for CHUM.

mojofilter 6th Sep 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - CHAM 1280 Solid Gold Rock 'N Roll (1971) | ReviewI think the blurb on the back cover deserves to be preserved for posterity. It says:
"Hi there, hipsters, flipsters and finger poppin' daddies! From the world of wild wild and wooly wax that's colored black and kept in a rack ' til we bring it back for you Jills and Jacks comes CHAM Solid Gold! Twelve groovy goodies that you can kick off your penny loafers and jive to, change the paper in your rabbit hutch to... whatever's cool for you. Here are one dozen swingin' sides that you used to hum while you cruised for burgers. Dig this really regal rock 'n' roll revival. You get refound old sounds like Everybody's Talkin' by Harry Nilsson, during which you'll hear him do his unique vocal interpretation of a New York police car... The Friends Of Distinction with their world famous interpretation of Grazin' In The Grass, and you can sing along with them as they go Ikindigityoukindigithecandigitshekindigittheykindigit and later go through the fun of having your tongue put in traction... Mike Nesmith And The First National Band standing in the light of the Silver Moon watching their faces get all furry, and, of course, there's a super set of simply sensational sound souvenirs by The Guess Who - These Eyes, No TIme (the sad story of a man whose favourite news magazine has been sold out by Harry, the magazine vendor), and Hand Me Down World, a tune that examines the consequences of getting a used Rand-McNally globe. Remember Blue Suede Shoes by Carl Perkins? There's A Moon Out Tonight by The Capris? Angel Baby by Rosie & The Originals? That's funny! So do I! Too bad they aren't on this album. Well, when you get this record home, kick off your shoes, grab your favorite guy or gal and say, "Put up your hands and hand over your money," which is physically impossible anyway."
