Biography - Free Reed    UK

The Free Reed label came into being via 'The Concertina Newsletter' (later renamed to 'Free Reed') edited by Neil Wayne which ran to 24 editions in the early to mid 1970s.

Wayne started selling LP records via the newsletter- mainly Bill Leader's Trailer label featuring concertina players - to help fund the newsletter, which was initially distributed free and relied on donations for funding. Sales of records expanded until 'Free Reed Records' was established, selling a wide range of folk music records to the public at discount prices.

The Free Reed label was originally established to release recordings of the older generation of concertina players (see for example Tommy Williams - Springtime In Battersea) but soon expanded to include artists current on the folk scene. Records were also released in association with the Topic label and are catalogued with 12TFRxxx numbers.

The Free Reed label remains active, with most of its back catalogue available on CD. It is still run by Neil Wayne (see Free Reed Records and Music) from his home in Derbyshire,UK which he also runs as a bed and breakfast - all welcome! He maintains his fanatical interest in concertinas and has established a second collection of instruments, his first collection now being housed in the Horniman Museum in London.
