From about April 1974 to December 1981, Motown employed a catalog number scheme that showed the list price as well as the number of records in the set. For example M7-840R2 was the soundtrack to Cooley High. Both the 7 and the R indicate a $7.98 list price. The 2 on the end: 2 records.

A - 9.98
C - 13.98
Canadian codes were different.
