Cy Leslie founded Pickwick Records May 1953 (as a fan of Charles Dickens.."Pickwick Papers")
He first began Cricket Records for children and later entered the budget LP market with his "Design" label.
Getting large record companies to lease their older archive material was not easy..even the artists were not keen to have older material resurfacing - but Capitol had faith and bought a 25% share in Pickwick. They then made their back catalogue available and together the watched the money roll in. This opened the way for other large companies to consider leasing to Pickwick.
