Biography - Radar UK The Radar label was created in late 1977 when music impresario Jake Riviera left Stiff Records, taking his star acts Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe with him. They teamed up with Andrew Lauder and Martin Davis (who had just left UK United Artists) to form the new label, which was distributed by WEA through most of the world. (In the US, three Radar acts--Yachts, Bram Tchaikovsky and the Inmates--appeared on Polydor through a licensing deal.) Releasing its first singles in early 1978, Radar soon distinguished itself with its diverse roster; the label released everything from power pop (Pezband, Sussex) to Krautrock (La Dusseldorf), from rockabilly (Ray Campi) to avant garde (The Red Crayola, The Pop Group). Radar also reissued 60s garage punk and psych from bands like the Shadows of Knight and the 13th Floor Elevators. Despite all this activity, few Radar acts besides Costello and Lowe charted, so WEA pulled the plug on Radar in late 1979, although they kept the label on life support for a few last releases until early 1981. Radar was revived as an indie rock label between 1995 and 1998. Its new roster included such worthy acts as Midget, Prolapse, Heave, Acacia, Unsophisticates, Morning Glories, and Pure Morning, the precursor to Clinic. « Discography Edit This Biography : Biography Credits
