Biography - Southland USA Southland Records came into being in 1948 or there abouts by Joseph P. Mares. Mares was then an amateur jazz clarinetist, and the younger brother of noted jazz cornetist Paul Mares. If you check the songwriter credits of many of Pete Fountain's tracks your will see the Mares Brothers listed. When Mares folded the label, no one was all that interested to taking it lock, stock & barell. Mares recorded artists who were mainly songwriters. When Mares folded the label, the only people other companies were interested in were Pete Fountain & Al Hirt. « Discography Edit This Biography : Biography Credits
