Notes

William (Yasef Lateef) Huddleston was an American jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer and a well-known person within the Ahmadiyya Community in America. Even though Mr. Lateef regularly played the tenor saxophone and flute, he also played the bassoon and the oboe, which were rarely played in the jazz scene. About a year after Dizzy Gillespie invited Mr. Lateef in 1949 to tour with his orchestra, Mr. Lateef had converted to the Islamic faith and had traveled twice to Mecca.

When Mr. Lateef began recording as a leader in 1957 for Savoy records, he recorded with Wilbur Harden, Herman Wright, Frank Gant and Hugh Lawson. A few years later in 1961, Lateef had utilized various instruments, such as the rahab, the shanai, the arghul, the koto and many Chinese flutes and bells along with his tenor and flute into all of the recordings that appeared by means of the Into Something and the Eastern Influences discs of 33.33 rpm.

Even though Mr. Lateef had more than ninety years of age, he had continued to teach musical courses at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Hampshire College in western Massachusetts. Sadly, Mr. Lateef died the morning of December 23, 2013, at the age of 93 years.

Finally, this is the penultimate (second-to-last) disc of 33.33 rpm of the Atlantic Jazz Series that was both monaurally and stereofonically issued in the United States and in Canada.
