Notes Big Black, who was born Danny Ray, was one of the first African-American artists to promote and perform music of African roots music despite the fact that Mr. Jimi Hendrix had achieved international fame as a black guitarist who superbly played rock and roll music psychedelic. In the 1950's, Big Black began his career in Miami playing in salsa and calypso bands from which he learned to blend Spanish music with African music. When Big Black had relocated to New York in the early 1960’s, he connected with the bebop scene and became a live percussionist for Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, and many others. He was dubbed the ‘king of congas’ and began spreading a message of black self-love and the fusion and reconnection with African music. Even though this UNI disc sold poorly, it ultimately became a highly sought-after disc particularly for those who enoyed the beat and sound of true African music that was blended with the salsa music sound.
