| | philmh: on re-reading the article you kindly found two and a half years ago (!) just now, i noticed a point i'd previously overlooked completely: cbs uk released double nice price lps. i don't remember noticing any such at the time, but it looks as though there may be more mining work to be done, still. . . |

PhilMH SUBS 22nd May 2017
| | This item in Billboard in September 1981 mentions that CBS launched the Nice Price series in Europe in the early spring of 1981. I tried searching for any articles that discussed Holland pressing for the whole of Europe, but there didn't seem to be anything fitting the bill. Information on that, and precise release dates, would probably have been in Music Week, and I don't know anyone who has sufficient back issues of that (I have a small number from the early 90s). The best bet in England is probably the British Library in London, but you're in Cumbria and I'm in Australia, so we need a volunteer with enough time on his/her hands to go to Kings Cross and strain their eyes for a few years! Failing that, CBS might have advertised at least some of the series in the consumer music press as well, so I'll try to get to my Melody Makers and NME's at some point. I seem to remember Record Mirror having a weekly new release list (probably copied from Music Week) around 1983/84 when I was buying it; I think I still have those somewhere. |

| | philmh: *nods* - it all happening during/after yr hmbl srppnt.'s getting involved in the setting up & then the running of single step, so i sort of lost contact with "the trade side" of the record business; but do you happen to know when & in what steps cbs yeurrp consolidated their lp production and distribution?
(yr hmbl srppnt.'s a sneaky suspicion that the distinction between cbs .de & cbs .nl, for instance, ceased during the life of the "nice price" series - if not from its inception as the follow-up to a scheme to shift excess unsold stocks of full-price lps by cutting the price (and racking them - ?and making them nonreturnable?) - but've no idea how and when it all smurged into one, including cbs .uk; nor what happened to cbs .it & cbs .fr - which latter seems to've completely missed out on/opted out of the "nice price" phenomenon - along the way...)
(and if there are firm dates, it'll make reconciling what're currently scattered bits of the cbs yeurppean empire's releases on "33cat" a sight easier. . .) |

| | I don't have any Netherlands catalogues anyway (if there were any such animals). I think I became aware around 1983/84 that CBS UK were getting NL pressings, but I don't know when that started. |
