Notes

Elvira “Vi” Redd is a jazz alto saxophonist, vocalist and educator, who is prominently known to play in the bebop (fast tempo), hard bop (mixture of jazz, gospel and rhythm and blues) and post-bop styles. Both her father, who was a renowned musician in the Central Avenue jazz area in Los Angeles, and her aunt, Alma Hightower, who was a well-known music teacher and bandleader, were strong influences that inspired Ms. Redd to become a saxophonist.

Though Ms. Redd was an accomplished musician in her early adulthood, she was employed by the Los Angeles board of education from 1957 to 1960 until Ms. Redd had again pursued her career in jazz music. This time, Ms. Redd had played at clubs in Las Vegas, went on tour with Earl Hines and conducted a group in San Francisco with her spouse Richie Goldberg, who was a drummer.

By means of this Lady Soul disc, which was the only Vi Redd disc of 33.33 rpm that Atco had issued, Miss Redd had composed not but one tune, Lady Soul and Frank Sinatra had co-composed This Love Of Mine. Despite the fact that this disc did not sell well, Ms. Redd had eventually earned the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Jazz Society.
