Vinyl Album
Notes This is the first Mainstream disc of 33.33 rpm which features the original recordings of Billie Holiday that were previously issued by means of the Commodore jazz label. Two tunes, which are Strange Fruit and Fine And Mellow were issued by means of the same disc of 78 rpm which ultimately sold millions of copies. Accordingly, Strange Fruit concerned the cruel punishment of hanging human beings that was performed by lynch mobs. Ms. Holiday first sang this tune in 1939 at the Cafe Society, which was the first night club that allowed both caucasians and blacks to perform and attend that club. Even though Ms. Holiday was initially fearful to record this tune, she decided to record this simply because the visual aspects of what this tune concerned reminded Ms. Holiday of her father. As a result, Ms. Holiday sang Strange Fruit at all her live performances. Sadly, Ms. Holiday passed away the 17 July 1959 due to cirrhosis of the liver.
