Notes This source comes from the 25 March 1967 edition of the Billboard magazine on page 58. Mr. Johnnie Taylor, who was born and reared in Arkansas, had performed in gospel groups during his childhood years. Some time later, he had become a member of the gospel group "The Highway QCs," of which Sam Cooke was also a member. Mr. Taylor had one tune, Somewhere to Lay My Head, was issued by means of the Vee-Jay record label of Chicago. Surprisingly, Mr. Taylor had replaced Sam Cooke the lead singer of The Soul Stirrers. Sometime later. Mr. Taylor had become one of the first artists of the SAR label, which was owned by Sam Cooke. One particular tune that Mr. Taylor had recorded was Rome Wasn't Built In One Day. Sadly, SAR records had become defunct after the death of Sam Cooke in December 1964. Less than two years later, Mr. Taylor had been signed to Stax records, where he had performed with Booker T. and The MGs. Two of Mr. Taylor's first recordings, I Had A Dream and I Got To Love Somebody's Baby were issued on the same Stax disc of 45 rpm. Though this disc did not achieve national success, this disc had reached the top twenty range of tunes of the rhythm and blues hit parade. A few months later, the LP Wanted One Soul Singer became his first disc of 33.33 rpm, which was a very poor seller. Now, this disc has become so highly sought after that record collectors are willing to pay over a thousand dollars for a near mint conditon of this LP. Images
