The back cover showed over here (image 1049572) does not belong to this Polydor compilation, but to THIS one :

Image 1049573 should be removed, as it shows a completely different catalogue number, in EMI's European system, so that would most likely be the 1976 Dutch original. As said previously, this copy is an 80s reissue, so year 1976 should be deleted.

Mod Edit: Done.

I think the collection was remastered in 1991 because all the earlier releases were basically rubbish, made from tapes a few generations removed from the originals. The one that you bought, RC, if it has the Universal Music Group International logo on it as well, would be from 2005 or later, after Fantasy had been sold to Concord, and Concord took their distribution to Universal. Fantasy (and Concord, for that matter) was still with Festival in Australia up to the time of the sale - and it tickles me to see the linked French release on a completely different and unrelated Festival label!

The cd I have is from the year of 1991 I bought it from JB HIFI about a month ago

PhilMH, I stand(or sit) corrected! the Grapevine track IS the single edit! But what I forgot about, and was reminded of just now as I looked at my copy, it's coupled for auto-changer turntables(Side 1/Side 4, then Side 2/Side 3). And now I remember, the full version of Grapevine was on an album called Creedence Gold. And RC, the CD would be a single disc as the capacity of that format could easily handle the entire content of this album, whereas the vinyl LP was restricted to 30 minutes a side(at a pinch, 33 minutes).

My copy is definitely a 2LP set! Issued in 1976 as L-70057/8 by Festival in Australia. This gets me back to the argument(probably dealt with in the Forums) about 2LP album catalogue numbers. If it takes 2 discs to store the content of one album, then the same catalogue number should apply to both discs and only the matrix numbers should(mostly) be sequential.
Thus, Chronicle should've been L-70057 OR L-70058, but certainly NOT L-70057/8.

And another thing - this compilation is seriously deficient in not including "Born On The Bayou", which did get included on the somewhat less stellar CHRONICLE VOL. 2, but there are more recent Creedence compilations of around 24 tracks which include "Bayou", and most, if not all, of this album, so those might be a better choice now.

I think the original 1976 version of the double LP only had the single edit of "Grapevine" - I remember one of 5KA's announcers complaining about it. The first CD editions might have had that edit too, but eventually the full version was restored. All CD editions have been a single CD, I think - is that what you meant, RC?

Aha! RC! True confessions of a former community radio presenter! So THAT'S why you played this track! How'd I find out? "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", of course! Ha-ha

Interesting about I heard it through the grapevine they never used the single edit but still it be quite handy if your going to Men's room or next door for a bite to eat or chatting up the receptionist hehe that's if your in radio of course

This LP showed up in Australia when Fantasy was distributed by Festival. It carried the full 11-odd minute version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine".

Polydor/PolyGram didn't introduce this style of catalogue number until the early 80s. 1976 is the copyright date for the compilation.
