 My guess is that the plain red came first. In the history of the singles, the plain blue came before the tartan pattern and the crest matches the earlier singles labels.

 Alternative label scans added. Does anyone have any idea which is earlier, the (more common) faux tartan label or the plain red variant? (your labels given pride of place now. mod.)
