quad5pt: that's donald w. reichie's listing of the merkin audio fidelity label releases, which aimed, like 45cat/worlds, to be comprehensive, including personnel performing: but although it has far more AFSD-prefix cat# lps than 45worlds does (so far)°, he seems to've been unaware of the audio fidelity label sampler AFS1 and its listing of the lps by title and artist upon its sleeve.
- he also seems unaware that the lp was by larry adler and other musicians as he neither lists them, nor indicates this information is lacking.
- yes, it's a bit of a muddle caused by audio fidelity's ill-considered lack of concern for future - or even then-present day - librarians and cataloguers ;-)
° - though he was only aiming to list the merkin label, not the uk label mfd & distr by transatlantic
as a last-ditch, last gasp, forlorn hope of an appeal, not utterly without loadbearing ability, if bundled securely with others no less strong than it, and preferably considerably stronger; but as a solitary straw - no way, josé! "weighed in the balance, and found wanting" is the phrase that comes - nay, springs - to mind. :-)
(& yes, audio fi's graphic designers(s) ought to've been given a severe talking-to by the record division manglement - prob'ly just joe, doing yet another little-considered and grossly-undervalued job in his tea-break - but also by the departments the record division "product" was meant to promote, who'd surely've wielded greater clout: we don't want potential clients thinking, "if they design their own records so poorly, why should we take them our custom?") (but maybe their presentation improved further on down the track. maybe.)
I take your point... so the wording of the perimeter text is standard for series, and should probably be discounted.
..But I still think the front cover wording (under "Larry Adler" is the tile: "A Study In High Fidelity Sound".
(Difficult to compare any other wording on the label, as that sampler is a various artists album, whereas this is by Larry Adler (and Quintet), so the bold writing on this could be the artist, but that one is the title in that place).
Are there any others in this series by other artists?
...If there are, it may be they all go by the same title, with only the cat number (and artist) distinguishing them.
I'd suggest: "A Study In High Fidelity Stereophonic Sound", or simply: "A Study In High Fidelity Sound", is the title... it's on the labels (around the edges), on the back of the cover (at the top), and on the front twice... the most prominent of the front cover ones is what you'd usually take to be a title.
if you look at the back cover of audio fidelity stereo showcase, the series sampler, which lists the entire audio fidelity catalogue at that time, AFSD 5916 is listed as "harmonica virtuoso / larry adler" which strongly suggests that either "harmonica virtuoso" or "larry adler - harmonica virtuoso" is its title, as does a second look at the lp sleeve housing this album: all the other instruments listed are played by other musicians with him, not in competition with him, nor by him.
Any suggestions as to the title of this album? Discogs has it as 'Harmonica Virtuso With Piano, Trumpet, Bass, Guitar And Drums' but that seems a bit long winded to me.
