Hello Phil, well the sound quality on this record is surprisingly good given the number of tracks. Much better than other similar long compilations like the "Golden Hour" series but of course not as good as the original albums/singles. It would have been improved, in my view, if A1 to A5 and B1 to B5 were side one and all the later (more psychedelic soul) stuff was on side two. Overall though a fantastic compilation in spite of the cover. The release date I entered was based on the publishing date on the label as that was all I had to go on. I'm quite happy to move the date along to 1982 and from memory I think I bought around then and it was a new release at the time. (Correction sent).
Hi Lee, the original April 1981 Australian issue of this album had catalogue number 6264049, which was a variation of the European EMI catalogue number (this compilation originated in the UK). These Motown/Astor/Rainbow issues date from 1982 or so, after Astor had been taken over by PolyGram, and the label layout (particularly the positioning and the fonts for the side and stereo designations) suggests that this is a PolyGram pressing from their Wellington, NZ factory. Certainly no later than September 1984 anyway, as Motown changed distributors to RCA in October of that year. And I agree about the ridiculous cover, but how's the sound quality, with 10 tracks crammed onto each side?
