Basically this is a cut-down version of the British album, Motown Chartbusters Vol.6 but with some notable content changes, which I will detail in my comments. I'm guessing the release year, nominating 1972 as a safe default, unless someone has better info, please feel free to make the correction.
RC, You were asking if Motown Chartbusters Volume 6 was issued in Australia during 1971? Simple answer, NO! This album was issued the following year, 1972, with notable variations in content and number of tracks. Plus the fact it was issued on EMI's budget AXIS label, and, to my knowledge, had not been reissued at any time since then.
In regard to R.C.'s last post, perhaps the record stores were trying to clear their stocks of cassette versions of albums. Probably weren't overly concerned whether the recipient even had a cassette player or not.
Thanks for that info Phil, but I think I bought the LP out of an Axis rack at a small electrical and mixed business shop in Stockton(suburb of Newcastle and my old stomping ground "many moons ago") but bought it sometime around 1973, which make it a year old by the time I got it. And to R.C., re the Popcorn LP, yes it did sound distorted, on both cassette and LP.
Funny you mentioned that one, R.C.! I once bought it on cassette but the sound quality was way to edgy and harsh. Some years later I was given an LP of the album and that same harsh, edgy audio quality was there too! I had bought the follow-up LP called Ticker Tape which had some original tracks among the cover versions. I'll upload it sometime soon.
Ahhh good old axis as I have the album called popcorn by a studio group called wait for it..............the electric coconut (sounds very groovy ay) I also have lieutenant pigeon on axis under the title called I'll take you home again Kathleen featuring mouldy old dough
As mentioned in notes, there are variations in the content of this album: Tracks A1 to 4 are as per CB6 but for this LP, TrA5 is My Guy(Mary Wells) against CB6's These Things Will Keep Me Loving You(Velvelettes), Then tracks A6 and 7 are the same, but CB6 track A8, Just My Imagination(Temptations) is not included in this Aussie edition. Flip the disc and B1 and 2 are the same but CB6 track B3, Heaven Must Have Sent You(Elgins) is omitted. CB6's tracks B4 to 8 become It's Summer tracks B3 to 7. CB6, by the way, is my abbreviation of Chartbusters Vol.6.
